LWV Opens Community Survey Phase of Election Authorities Study

Published on 4/29/2026

The League of Women Voters of McLean County has opened a community input phase of its ongoing study of McLean County election administration.

Community members are invited to complete an online survey about their local voting experiences. This exploratory survey will help get insights from voters themselves about how they think about and experience the voting process.

The study is exploring ways to reduce candidate and voter confusion about the two election authorities in McLean County – the Bloomington Election Commission, and McLean County Clerk’s office. It is also looking for opportunities to improve election practices and election administration efficiency. In other study phases, the League interviewed key stakeholders and subject matter experts, and gathered election-related data.

The study began in 2025 in response to reports about voter confusion in recent years as voting options and methods expanded and changed. McLean County is one of a minority of Illinois counties with multiple election authorities; each has varying operations that impact the voter’s experience.

Community members can complete the survey online at lwvmclean.org/votingsurvey.

McLean County League President Chad Kahl said, “Our mission is to empower voters and defend democracy. Ensuring that voting is a straightforward and easily understood process encourages regular participation.”

The League conducts studies in the interests of voters and taxpayers as one way to ensure it meets its mission to empower voters. League studies are used to develop informed positions on matters of public importance.

The study committee intends to present findings at a summer League membership meeting. Members will then decide whether findings support further League action.
